An Amazing Opportunity
14 May / 08
As some of you may already know, I was forced to drop out of the 2007-2008 school year due to the inability to get student loan and finance the tremendous cost of a post-secondary institution.
So here I am, as most of my friends are graduating with degrees, I'm still stuck about three years behind them (not to say that some of that isn't my fault of course). I've been working solid for the past few months, trying to pay off some debt (inevitable, it seems, for a student life).
Then, as if the universe was finally taking note of my struggle, a message was brought to me. I have been offered what can essentially be called a full-time scholarship to a school of my choice that will cover all of my tuition and books. I was completely blown away by the offer, as I assume one would be.
Needless to say, it alleviates much of the stress that had been put on me, most specifically on the need to both eliminate my debt and save up enough for school in September.
I'm tremendously happy to know that my only problem is going to be in picking a program, not trying to generate the funds to attend it.

After Summer, Comes September

I have some decision making to do. I have been really trying to get back into (and stay in) my creative side (web/graphic design specifically). I know I still have a plethora to learn, but helping out the Origin boys with web stuff, doing posters for other friends, and keeping myself busy with personal designs is really helping lately. I only wish I didn't have to wake up for work in the mornings else I'd be up until 4AM every night (why is it I can only get work done in the wee hours of the morning?).
So then, back to my decision making process. I want to go back to school in September, this I am sure of. Now that I've been out of High School for 4 years, I'll be able to apply to a government loan without having a parent co-apply. Them be the rules, I know it doesn't make sense.
Essentially, I need to figure out whether I'm going to spend the money on a 15-month program that would allow me to still maintain a full-time job and learn about things that are close to my heart (design), OR spend it on a 2-4 year program related to Accounting.
I've been looking at Camosun's Web Design program. The first few courses seem rather trivial to me, but I suppose going through all of that stuff again thoroughly will probably show me that I've been doing simple things wrong here and there. I wish the course had more PHP/MySQL stuff, but I guess I'd have to pick that up elsewhere.
Other than that, it looks like a great program where I can hone my skills and add a nice little 'certificate' to my resume/portfolio. I'm definitely leaning towards the Web Design, but in the end, it unfortunately comes down to whether or not the government is going to loan me the money to do it.
